Episode 138: 2021 Business Predictions

so you wanna be a witch episode 138: 2021 business predictions. Sarah Chappell smiling at the camera while blocking the sun from her eyes.

The illusion of stability is gone.

If 2020 and the first couple weeks of 2021 have taught us anything, it’s that. Predictions feel challenging when our world is being turned upside down over and over again: A pandemic, uprisings, an attempted coup. How are we supposed to keep showing up to our daily grind as if everything is normal?

We’re not. And that is the gift and freedom that owning a small business gives us. When we have ourselves and our ideal clients to answer to, it is imperative that we are honest, compassionate, and flexible. We are not Amazon. We don’t guarantee 2 day delivery in the midst of a coup. We are humans living in the world we are creating.

I say all the time: Owning a business continues to be a revolutionary act because it brings your values into the world. When we are able to make our values into practices that touch other people, we create new worlds.

And here we are, in a new world! Small business owners have the opportunity to adapt and respond to it. But adapting isn’t just reactionary. It still requires thought, intention, and planning. So, this episode is a look ahead into 2021 and what my “spidey senses” are telling me that we can predict about business in the new year.

Join us this week to hear my business predictions for 2021 and learn about my new love affair with my autoresponder.

Show Notes:

7:20– First prediction: The comeback of longform content.

16:29– Second prediction: Alternative advertising platforms.

19:55– Third prediction: Community in online programs.

24:35– Fourth prediction: Hardcore boundaries.

Episode 137: Self-Care in Service with Scout Chavers

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 137: Scout Chavers. Birthwork. Doula. Wild + Awake. Birth Wild Awake. Scout looking straight into the camera, wearing a yellow shirt.

Did you know that you can weave your self-care into your work?

If you have a business grounded in community care and individual support, making sure you can sustain your business without burning yourself out is crucial.

This week, I am so excited to welcome Scout Chavers of Wild + Awake to the podcast. Scout is an intuitive healer, generational doula, and somatic guide in Austin, TX. They work with individuals and families to usher them through all kinds of life changes. Scout is committed to working with marginalized communities to ensure their birthright of awareness and wellness, and uses their resourced connections to redistribute wealth and resources within their community.

In our interview, Scout and I talk about finding threads that connect our seemingly disparate work and how to weave together a cohesive business doing the things we love. We discuss the balance of sustainability and accessibility in service-based business, and how to redistribute wealth in a way that allows service providers to be well compensated for working with under-resourced communities.

Join us this week for a rich conversation about truly caring for your community without sacrificing yourself.

Episode 136: January Energy Reading

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 136: January Energy Reading. Tarot cards on the ground with Sarah's hand hovering over them.

What could our lives be if we gave our business permission to be boring?

Y’all know that I am passionate about business, but I’m no Pollyanna: There are parts of running a business that suck. There are parts of running a business that are hard and dull and that starts to feel confusing when the messages around entrepreneurship are often:

+Wake up and love what you do everyday!

+You should be passionate about what you do!

+Stop hating your Job and start loving your Work!

This month, the cards are reminding us that the dishes still need to get done, the tax forms need to be filled out, and the payroll needs to be processed. Most importantly, they are giving us permission to be bored with our menial tasks and embrace working through The Slog.

Business can’t be our Everything and accepting that relieves a lot of pressure. This month, we are being asked to face the multiplicity of ourselves and our desires. We are asked to be our whole selves and embrace the entirety of our experience.

Join me for the first energy reading of 2021 and ask yourself: If you allow parts of your business to just become A Job (even if it’s the best job you’ve ever had) what space does that open up for passion in your life?

Show Notes:

00:57– Energy of the Month: Temperance. Integrating multiplicity.

7:03– Action of the Month: Five of Pentacles. De-demonize the slog.

15:57– Release of the Month: Ace of Wands. Where else can you fill your well?

19:05– Outcome of the Month: The Star. The hope in healing.

Episode 135: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of 2020

episode 135 So You Wanna Be a Witch: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of 20202. Sarah Chappell in a white sweater smiling into the camera.

Did you meet your goals this year?

It’s the end of December, so now is the time to turn back the pages of your real-or-metaphorical journal and give yourself a reality check. I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours!

2020 is (almost) OVER, y’all and it’s been a long time coming. I’ve had some big wins, some personal wins, some learning curves, and some frankly shitty blows. This week, I’m sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly of my business in 2020.

As always, I’m not here to be glossy–I’m here to be transparent with you about my experience and my numbers. I’ve phased out parts of my business and overhauled others. I’ve gone through ups and downs in hiring. I’ve made amazing connections through my business and been taken advantage of. Ultimately, both my successes and my failures of this year keep bringing me back to the same point:

The qualitative experience of my business is a far better measure of success than numbers.

Isn’t that just the classic Hallmark holiday lesson?

Join me this week for our New Year’s Reality Check and help me craft a new term for the newbie business tip that I currently call: “the spaghetti method”.

Show notes:

1:08– My word for 2020: Focus!

5:22– How I measured up to my goal.

10:01– The Good: Where I let go and what I added.

12:34– The Bad: Hiring and firing.

16:03– The Ugly: Boundaries, theft, and social media.

Episode 134: A Commitment to Authenticity

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 134: A Commitment to Authenticity. Sarah Chappell laughs, looking over her shoulder, in front of a window.

Do you show up in your business as your whole and real self?

Healthy business boundaries are crucial, as is not exploiting our personal lives for attention, so I usually keep things, well…business-oriented here! I’m not into oversharing, but I do value authenticity, so when I caught myself censoring my Instagram Stories, I knew it was time to dive deeper.

This episode is my side of the conversations I want to be having with you, my community, right now. I want conversations that dance in the nuanced spaces between false binaries: inclusivity vs. universality, hustle vs. hard work, commitment vs. pleasure, individualism vs. individuality.

We’ll enter this exploration through my personal experience of coming to better understand my neurodivergence and how it is changing the way I approach my relationship to business, social media, and our community.

What happens when we show up with authenticity? What happens when we show up with good faith? Is it possible to let people know they are seen without censoring ourselves or stamping disclaimers on all of our personal experiences?

Join me this week in the “ramble zone” and let’s figure out how to bring back the lightheartedness of sharing on our fucking instagram stories.

Show Notes:

3:08– Commitment in business

7:12– Anti-hustle, giftedness, and my neurodivergence

11:57– Personal experience vs. inclusivity on social media

28:02– When success requires a longer commitment

Episode 133: The Holistic Guide to Pricing

Episode 133 So You Wanna Be a Witch: Holistic Pricing. Sarah Chappell sitting in a tree by a river, looking off into the distance.

Do you still have one foot out the door of your business? You may feel all-in, but your pricing might say otherwise.

Pricing is HARD, y’all! And mostly just because the question “What do you really need?” makes us squirm. Instead, it’s easier to set our prices based on the offers we see on the internet or what we imagine people might be willing to pay us. Offloading the responsibility of honest pricing keeps us from committing to our well-being and our success.

I am here to tell you that is not the way to a holistic business.

So, in this episode I am really breaking down the process of pricing your offers. I show you how to set goals, how to price individual offers, and how to think about the pricing in your business as a whole.

The end of the year is a great time to reassess your pricing! Join us this week to move out of “What can I get?” and into a way of pricing that actually supports YOU (and maybe even your seltzer habit).

Show Notes:

2:09– The first question to ask when pricing an offer

4:48– Your minimum goal.

6:20– Do the math!

12:01– What is “Market Price”?

15:23– The value of what you provide.

Episode 132: December Energy Reading

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 132: December Energy Reading. Coffee cup on a table with 3 tarot cards and a planner.

Let’s talk about your desire for control.

We all desire agency and power in our lives, but sometimes our fear of the unknown and our compulsion for control keeps us attached to the less-than-ideal outcomes we are familiar with and keeps us fearful of turning to the possibility in the unknown.

Does that sound familiar?

This month, the cards are asking us to let go of the security blanket of our most precious fears, our most limiting beliefs. They are straight-up telling us to quit being a baby and stop the hemorrhage of self-pity and fear that might be getting us the attention we want, but isn’t moving us forward in our lives or in our businesses.

December is a reminder that, when we shift our perceptions, we start to take different actions.

December is about harnessing our emotion into (com)passionate leadership.

December is why I fucking love belief work and why it is a cornerstone of everything I practice and everything I teach.

Whether you want to be or not, as an entrepreneur, you are in a leadership role with great power. Let’s close out this year by taking responsibility for it.

Join us this week to reclaim your agency and step into your power, whatever the external circumstances you are standing in at the end of this year.

Show Notes:

1:49– Energy of the Month: King of Cups, reversed. Stop being a baby.

9:20– Action for the Month: King of Wands. Harness your passion.

14:35– Release Work for the Month: Five of Pentacles. Choose how you respond.

17:38– Outcome for the Month: Eight of Swords. You are not as stuck as you think.

Episode 131: Your Minimal Viable Business

Episode 131 So You Wanna Be a Witch: Your Minimal Viable Business. A white coffee mug on a white table.

What is the best that your worst self is capable of?

We build our businesses out of our dreams, which often center us being our best selves—and they should! We want to grow and create our best lives and build businesses to support that.

But one of the biggest mistakes I see entrepreneurs making is failing to take into account who we are when we are at our worst.

I believe in personal agency, but I also know we can’t control our external circumstances! When shit hits the fan, when we get sick, when we get overwhelmed, when our world turns upside down, what are our limits? What are our coping mechanisms? What do we need?

So this week, I want to take the concept of the Minimal Viable Product and extend it into a full business model. I want us to look really hard at what “good enough” means and how we can prepare for it. I want us to be honest with ourselves so that we can be honest with our customers.

We can’t know everything that will happen, but we can know our tendencies and create systems that support them.

Join us this week to face our perfectionism head-on and learn how to do a better job of taking care of ourselves AND our customers, no matter what we’re going through.

Show Notes:

0:15– What does “minimally viable” mean?

6:24– Who are you when shit sucks?

11:29– What are your baseline operations?

15:40– Selling through a shitshow.

Episode 129: Building Better Teams Through Human Design with Erin Claire Jones

Episode 129 So You Wanna Be a Witch: Building Better Teams Through Human Design with Erin Claire Jones. Erin lying on her bed and staring into the camera.

How do you tell the difference between a great candidate and a great fit for your team?

It isn’t just the skills that matter, it’s the chemistry.

As a hiring business owner, you could have a pile of stellar resumes with friendly faces to choose from, but the part that you are responsible for reading is: Who will I work best with? Who will fit with the team I already have established? Who will fit into the culture I want to create while also bringing in the pieces that are currently missing?

This can feel like a lot of pressure! So, I was super excited to talk to Erin Claire Jones this week. Erin has used Human Design to help thousands of individuals and companies step into their work and their lives as their truest selves and access their highest potential.

Human Design is pretty new to me, but everyone is talking about it. Based on time, date, and place of birth, Human Design pulls from many different systems to give us a blueprint of how we are best able to thrive.

In this episode, Erin breaks down what Human Design is, how we can use it to better understand ourselves, and how to use that understanding to recognize the people who will best fit into our business.

Join us this week to hear Erin pick me apart and put all my strengths and shadows on display for y’all! And tune in to learn more about how you can use this system to strengthen your relationships and your business.
