Episode 193: Astrology as a Texturizer with Bess Matassa

Astrology isn’t here to dictate your life.

Astrology is a map.

A terrain for life.

A red carpet to possibility.

This week on the podcast, I’m thrilled to be joined by Bess Matassa, PhD, a New York-based astrologer and tarot reader who serves up mystical self-inquiry with a side of play, poetry, and pop music.

Bess is the co-author of The Numinous Astro Deck (Sterling, 2019); the author of Zodiac Signs: Leo and Virgo (Sterling, 2020), and The Numinous Cosmic Year: Your Astrological Almanac (Aster, 2021); and has been a celestial consultant for platforms and institutions including Teen Vogue, Almay cosmetics, Ace Hotel, and the Rubin Museum of Art. When not combing the cosmos, Bess can be spotted sporting hot pink lipstick while wandering deserts and tropics.

In this episode, Bess shares the story that led her from a young child reading pop-up astrology books to an astrologer, tarot reader, and author. She talks about her very exciting new book and the process of writing an entire year of upcoming astrology. Bess and I also discuss the element of truth, embodiment in business, and using astrology as a tool of possibility.

Tune in to consider a new relationship with astrology and tarot so you can apply this roadmap to possibility within your business.

And if you loved hearing from Bess, be sure to grab yourself a copy of her new book, The Numinous Cosmic Year: Your Astrological Almanac, from your favorite book store!

Episode 192: November Energy Reading

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 192: November Energy Reading. Sarah M. Chappell's hands prepare to flip the top card of a tarot deck.

You have a choice.

Y’all, it’s been a few months since we’ve done an energy reading.

But today, with the north winds blowing from the realm of fate, I am pulled to my altar, back to the cards, and into that trance between fate and free will.

With the cards giving us our question today, we approach a fork in the road.

We are given an opportunity to decide what relationship we want to have with the parts of us that betray ourselves within our business.

Do we continue as we have been or is there another option?

The cards are telling us that November is about choosing a different path. We can look at that relationship and choose differently.

Tune in this week to learn more about what the cards are telling us about the month of November so you can establish a healthier relationship with your business. And don’t forget to hop on over to the Holistic Business Academy, the doors are open!

Episode 191: What’s Wrong With My Marketing?

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 191: What's Wrong With My Marketing? Sarah M. Chappell sits at her desk looking curiously at her laptop.

My marketing bombed.

Yep, that’s right. This past week, I shared a post, and it completely bombed.

And it made me think twice about how I’ve been feeling, what my state of mind is, and what message my audience was looking for that I didn’t provide.

They can’t all be winners.

Everything you post is not going to get a thousand likes and comments.

But if your post bombs completely, there is a reason.

There is something wrong.

So, what do you do with a post that bombed?

What does the lack of success say about the post?

Do you have to toss out the whole idea after you spent 30 hours writing it?

In this episode, I’m teaching you the steps of triaging a post that failed. And I’m actually assessing my own failed post live for you so you can learn from my mistakes.

Y’all, if you’ve ever asked yourself “what’s wrong with my marketing?,” this episode is for you.

Tune in so next time you’re having a marketing SOS moment you know exactly what steps to follow so you can assess and move on.

Episode 190: When Will You Be Successful?

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 190: When Will You Be Successful? Sarah M. Chapell smiles and gazes off into the distance.

What is success?

You’re probably scrolling through Instagram and seeing other small business owners boasting about their biz achievements, going on expensive vacations, or talking about their six-figure businesses.

And seeing these posts might have you wondering if you’re ever going to get there.

If you’re ever going to be able to afford that big, expensive vacation.

If you’re ever going to own a six-figure business.

And let’s be clear: just because someone is posting about their six-figure business doesn’t mean they’re making six-figures a year.

What you see on the surface of social media is not an accurate depiction of someone’s business. You have no idea what they did to get there. You have no idea what those numbers actually mean.

Was that their gross or net income?

How much did they spend to make that?

Did they pay for that vacation or did someone else?

Trust me when I say that social media is not giving you a true image of success.

This week on the podcast I’m answering a question you’ve likely wondered about and maybe even asked: when will I be successful? I’m encouraging you to look at how you measure success. To think about what being successful would feel like, what your life would look like, and how to set goals to help you get there.

Tune in so you can create your own vision of success and set yourself up to achieve it.

Episode 189: Business is a Job

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 189: Business is a Job. Sarah M. Chappell sits in front of her computer working.

Do you love what you do?

We’ve all been told that if you love what you do, it won’t feel like work.

So when you set out to start your own business, you are ready for that feeling of alignment to set in and to feel truly fulfilled and happy in every moment of your business.

And when you get into the pieces of work that feel like, well, work, you’re frustrated.

You’re burnt out.

You’re feeling guilty that you’re not passionate about every piece of your work.

But you left your job! You found something you love!

So why aren’t you enjoying every moment?

Let’s be honest, there are always going to be parts of your business that are work. You’re not going to be passionate and excited about every HTML code, every email automation, or every database entry.

This week on the podcast we’re talking about why it’s actually good to treat your business like a job. I’m telling you why you should let things be mundane, and how embracing this “job” aspect of my business has positively impacted my daily life.

Tune in so you can reassess your relationship with your business. (And maybe even take an actual day off!)

Show Notes:

Episode 188: Collaborations

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 188: Collaborations. Sarah M. Chappell stands outside with one hand on her hip.

How did you feel during the Facebook outage?

Were you stressed about the implications for your business?

Concerned that the IG post you had scheduled wouldn’t post or be seen?

Anxious about the money you’d spent on ads that day?

If you’re like a lot of the business owners I work with, social media is your main marketing platform. You use Facebook and Instagram to communicate with your audience, share your latest offers, and maintain the face of your business.

And I’m not here to tell you to stop using social media for your business.

But I am going to recommend that you consider adding other methods to your marketing plan so that when something like a social media outage comes around, you don’t feel like you’re about to lose everything.

And today I’m telling you about one of my favorites: collaboration.

Collaborating with peers and fellow business owners with an overlapping audience can be incredibly beneficial for both your business and those you collaborate with.

But this doesn’t mean sending someone a DM asking them to promote your work. And it doesn’t mean you have to create something new with them.

The most successful collaborations start with the three clear steps I’m going to walk you through in this week’s episode.

Tune in so you can start leveraging collaborations in your business today!

4:00 – The 3 clear steps of collaboration

Episode 186: Take a Break

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 186: Take a Break. Sarah M. Chappell sits in the grass with her elbow resting on her knee and her head resting on her fist looking up and away.

When was the last time you took a break?

No, really, I want to know. When was the last time you stepped away from your work? Read a book? Took a nap? Spent an entire afternoon binge watching your favorite show?

When you are running your own business, you feel like nothing will get done if you don’t just do it. So you do. You sit on your computer all day trying to get that blog post written, that sales page designed, that new offer developed.

You get frustrated when it takes longer than you think it should. And you make mistakes.

You reach a point of overwhelm. Nothing is going right, you’re burnt out, and you want to run away.

But you don’t.

You keep working.

You keep trying.

You don’t stop.

And then you’re so overwhelmed, so burnt out, that you decide you have to run away. You should probably just take a month off. You need to put your business on hold and tell your audience that you will be gone for a while. You need to take a huge step back. Right?

Wrong.

This week on the podcast I’m sharing the three main things that let us know it’s time to take a break. And I’m sharing what to do when these problems start creeping up in your life and your business.

Tune in so you can begin to notice these red flags and TAKE A FUCKING BREAK (before you hit the point of wanting to burn your business to the ground).

Episode 185: Quick Coaching with Sarah. Transitioning from Sliding Scale to Flat Rate Pricing

Quick Coaching with Sarah Chappell. Sarah Chappell sitting in a cafe and smiling into the camera.

Does change have to mean loss?

Anytime you change anything in your business, you are bound to lose customers. Read that again. Then take a deep breath, because it’s okay.

Change is good. Especially when these changes are helping you to align your business with your goals.

This week on Quick Coaching with Sarah, we are talking about transitions within your business. We discuss what you can do to prepare your audience (and yourself) for upcoming changes.

We answer:

1:13 – How can I transition from a sliding scale to a flat rate fee without losing folks?

Episode 184: Are You a Scammer?

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 184: Are You a Scammer? Sarah M. Chappell looking skeptically into the distance.

Are you ripping people off?

Many of the people I work with have a huge fear of being a scammer. Being a spiritual entrepreneur, it’s common to have a heightened awareness of ethics that can lead you to regularly questioning yourself, undervaluing yourself, and worrying that you’re taking advantage of people.

You spend your time honing your skills, practicing on friends, perfecting your craft. Then you go out into the world and struggle to charge for your offers. You can’t possibly fathom that someone would want to spend their money with you.

You aren’t worth it.

You haven’t been practicing for long enough.

Your work has been a hobby for so long, no one will pay for it.

No one wants what you have to offer.

And once they do buy? Panic sets in. What if they realize you’re not good enough? What if they don’t get what they paid for? What if you’re taking advantage of them? What if you overcharged? What if you can’t deliver?

What if you are a scammer?

Lucky for you, I was just scammed, and feel pretty darn clear on this topic! This week I’m walking you through every step of how I got scammed by a moving company so you can finally understand what an intentional scam looks like and how it might appear in a small business like yours.

Tune in so you can step back, look at the ethics in your business, and discover if you truly are a scammer. (Hint: you’re not!)
