Episode 144: Witchcraft Isn’t Safe with Britton Boyd and J. Allen Cross

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 144: Witchcraft Isn't Safe with Britton Boyd and J. Allen Cross

Do you like your witchcraft dirty and dangerous?

Magic is having a revival right now. Witches are sliding into our DMs, spells are all over our Instagram feeds, and witchcraft is suddenly accessible and trendy. Many of us are revelling in the magical community (literally and figuratively) that the internet gives us. We can connect with others like us! No matter where we live, we can learn from others and share our experiences. It’s amazing!

But there’s another side to this coin. With witchcraft taking the world like a new self-help regimen, it needs to be accessible to everyone. It needs to be safe, it needs to be clean, it needs to be easy, and (if it’s going to sell) it needs to be cute.

Enter Britton Boyd and J. Allen Cross: two badass witches and practitioners of folk magic in Oregon, asking us to learn our histories, learn our traditions, and be ready to get messy. They are both dedicated to going deep in the witchy archives and getting tactile with their practices. In this episode, they share about the roots of their magic traditions, the value of rules in witchcraft, and why working with spirits isn’t something to take lightly.

If you like badass witches who do downhome folk magic, tune in to this week’s podcast and learn about Britton and J.’s work, hear all about their new podcast, and learn why you should probably make pee part of your practice.

Episode 143: March Energy Reading

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 143: March Energy Reading. Tarot cars on a mossy stone wall.

Sometimes, following your desire sucks.

When asked about why we start our own businesses or what our dream life looks like, we’ll often say: “I want to be able to make my own choices!” or “I want to have options and be able to follow my passions!”, right?

When we say these things, when we crave this life of opportunity, we are forgetting that part of the process of choosing is the act of letting go, saying no, and closing doors. When we choose one thing, we are rejecting others and that can be painful.

March is a culling.

This month, the cards are finding us stuck in the resentment we feel when we face the reality that we actually have to CHOOSE something over something else… and it sucks. It just sucks. We want to grow our business and grow our family. We want to launch new offers and we want to rest. We want to go two totally different directions in our business, but there are only so many hours in a day, in a week, in a month, and we have to choose. And, in choosing, in prioritizing, we might lose something we like. We might lose something we love.

March is a month of tension between the grief of choice and the joy of stepping into the life we truly desire. It is acknowledging both the pain and the excitement of prioritizing what we want and what we need. This month, the cards are clear in asking us to be real about what we want to DO, not how we want to be SEEN, and move forward from there.

Do you love your work because you love being recognized as an expert on it? Or do you love your work because of what you spend your time doing? How would your business change if you didn’t consider what other people thought and you only worried about what brought you fulfillment?

Tune in for a week of hard hitting questions and let me know your answers below.

Show Notes:

3:07– Energy of the Month: Five of Wands, Reversed. The grief of choice.

10:53– Action of the Month: Ten of Cups. Prioritizing emotional fulfillment.

13:47– Release Work of the Month: Six of Wands. Ignoring the accolades.

Episode 142: Protecting Your Business Vision

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 142: Protecting Your Business Vision. Sarah Chappell standing in front of a river with her eyes closed and hands over her heart.

How do you take feedback?

Do you go looking for it? Do you ignore it? Do you filter it? Are you compelled to respond to all of it?

Feedback is so engaging and I don’t know many entrepreneurs who don’t get emotionally pulled into other people’s opinions about how they are running their business.

We created our business to serve people and so we want people to be pleased! It is hard to hear that someone wants us or our business to be different. It can be hard to say no to people who want more from us.

But we also need feedback! Without feedback from our customers, we are bulldozing ahead with our ideas without actually checking to see what is serving people! And no matter how much we love our work and how great we think our ideas are, if they aren’t connecting with the people we want to serve, then they are not going to be successful.

Not all problems are yours to solve! Learning to tune out feedback from folks who want you to BE different is one of the most important emotional skills business owners can develop!

Too much feedback can distort your personal vision for your business and the work you want to be doing in the world. Not enough feedback can keep you ignorant as to why your business isn’t growing in the ways that you hoped. As always: balance is key!

So, this episode is dedicated to just that: Collecting, filtering, and managing feedback while holding your personal vision in the center of all your actions. It is possible to be solutions-oriented when it comes to feedback!

Join me this week to learn how I collect and manage feedback in my own business and for some homework assignments that invite you to make feedback a crucial tool in your business!

And if you are an established business owner with a clear vision that you are ready to SCALE, check out the Holistic Business Incubator: a three-month program to guide you through creating a personalized Scalable Sales System for the work you already love that you can use again and again to generate revenue without being “on” all the time.

Episode 141: Your Scalable Sales System

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 141: Your Scalable Sales System. Sarah Chappell smiling into the camera in front of a green wall.

Scaling a business is not just making more money!

Scaling is a hip word in the business community and with good reason. Scaling can be the answer to sustaining a small business in the long run. But what actually IS scaling?

You can make more money WITHOUT scaling by either working more or charging more! That is called business growth. Scaling is about getting out of the 1:1 ratio of work input and compensation output.

In other words: You put the work in on the front end to make a wide-reaching offer easily repeatable, so that you get to reap the rewards over the life of your business.

I see people make a lot of the same mistakes when they first attempt to scale their business and some of the most common questions in my DMs right now are about how to do this without burning out!

So, this week on the podcast I am breaking down scalable offers, scalable sales, and scalable systems for you. I am sharing some of my biggest secrets for success and sanity in my launch process, and inviting you into an approach that allows your offers to get EASIER for you every time.

Tune in to peek behind the curtain of “immediate success” and learn the steps you can take to make scaling your business successful from the start.

Episode 140: Organize Your Business!

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 140: Organize Your Business! Sarah's hand writing in a journal on a wooden counter.

How do you grow your business without losing your shit?

When starting a business, it can be hard to know where to start, but once running a business it can be hard to keep up!

In my years of supporting business owners, one of the top questions I get is: How do I organize my business day to day? You have daily tasks, weekly tasks, monthly tasks, emergencies to handle, and on top of all of it you are supposed to be the creative force in your business! It’s so easy to waste your time jumping from task to task, trying not to forget anything, and end up dropping balls all over the place.

I want you to work effectively and efficiently, so that you can take off your Boss Hat at the end of the day and know that everything is taken care of!

With dozens of software programs promising to change your life, to the swath of business gurus trying to persuade you that their way is The Way to grow a business, what we know about ourselves and our own needs can easily be drowned out. You know I’m not here for dogma or the One Way Highway, so this week on the podcast talking about the most crucial concepts of business organization and sharing my process of making them work for me!

Episode 139: February Energy Reading

So You Wanna Be a Witch episode 139: February Energy Reading. 2 Tarot cards on a mossy stone surface.

Do your days add up to the life you want?

There is no getting out of the mundane work of life and I am not here to tell you that every moment of your life has to be a revelation. There are going to be days that we are enthusiastic about and there are going to be days that we are bored. There are going to be happy days and there are going to be sad days. This month, the cards are indicating that we may be teetering into overwhelm and wondering if this is really the life we want.

February is asking us to clear the fog and ask: “Why am I doing this?”

Maybe that clarity will show you that the boring days are supporting a life and work you truly love.

Maybe that clarity will show you that the work you need to make a hard turn in your work.

This month, the cards are asking us to make strong decisions about what we truly value. They are asking us to make sure that we are centering our daily lives in the building of our businesses.

Tune into the podcast this week for an invitation to break out of your head, kill your darlings, and turn this tipping point into an opportunity.

Episode 138: 2021 Business Predictions

so you wanna be a witch episode 138: 2021 business predictions. Sarah Chappell smiling at the camera while blocking the sun from her eyes.

The illusion of stability is gone.

If 2020 and the first couple weeks of 2021 have taught us anything, it’s that. Predictions feel challenging when our world is being turned upside down over and over again: A pandemic, uprisings, an attempted coup. How are we supposed to keep showing up to our daily grind as if everything is normal?

We’re not. And that is the gift and freedom that owning a small business gives us. When we have ourselves and our ideal clients to answer to, it is imperative that we are honest, compassionate, and flexible. We are not Amazon. We don’t guarantee 2 day delivery in the midst of a coup. We are humans living in the world we are creating.

I say all the time: Owning a business continues to be a revolutionary act because it brings your values into the world. When we are able to make our values into practices that touch other people, we create new worlds.

And here we are, in a new world! Small business owners have the opportunity to adapt and respond to it. But adapting isn’t just reactionary. It still requires thought, intention, and planning. So, this episode is a look ahead into 2021 and what my “spidey senses” are telling me that we can predict about business in the new year.

Join us this week to hear my business predictions for 2021 and learn about my new love affair with my autoresponder.

Episode 137: Self-Care in Service with Scout Chavers

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 137: Scout Chavers. Birthwork. Doula. Wild + Awake. Birth Wild Awake. Scout looking straight into the camera, wearing a yellow shirt.

Did you know that you can weave your self-care into your work?

If you have a business grounded in community care and individual support, making sure you can sustain your business without burning yourself out is crucial.

This week, I am so excited to welcome Scout Chavers of Wild + Awake to the podcast. Scout is an intuitive healer, generational doula, and somatic guide in Austin, TX. They work with individuals and families to usher them through all kinds of life changes. Scout is committed to working with marginalized communities to ensure their birthright of awareness and wellness, and uses their resourced connections to redistribute wealth and resources within their community.

In our interview, Scout and I talk about finding threads that connect our seemingly disparate work and how to weave together a cohesive business doing the things we love. We discuss the balance of sustainability and accessibility in service-based business, and how to redistribute wealth in a way that allows service providers to be well compensated for working with under-resourced communities.

Join us this week for a rich conversation about truly caring for your community without sacrificing yourself.

Episode 136: January Energy Reading

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 136: January Energy Reading. Tarot cards on the ground with Sarah's hand hovering over them.

What could our lives be if we gave our business permission to be boring?

Y’all know that I am passionate about business, but I’m no Pollyanna: There are parts of running a business that suck. There are parts of running a business that are hard and dull and that starts to feel confusing when the messages around entrepreneurship are often:

+Wake up and love what you do everyday!

+You should be passionate about what you do!

+Stop hating your Job and start loving your Work!

This month, the cards are reminding us that the dishes still need to get done, the tax forms need to be filled out, and the payroll needs to be processed. Most importantly, they are giving us permission to be bored with our menial tasks and embrace working through The Slog.

Business can’t be our Everything and accepting that relieves a lot of pressure. This month, we are being asked to face the multiplicity of ourselves and our desires. We are asked to be our whole selves and embrace the entirety of our experience.

Join me for the first energy reading of 2021 and ask yourself: If you allow parts of your business to just become A Job (even if it’s the best job you’ve ever had) what space does that open up for passion in your life?

Show Notes:

00:57– Energy of the Month: Temperance. Integrating multiplicity.

7:03– Action of the Month: Five of Pentacles. De-demonize the slog.

15:57– Release of the Month: Ace of Wands. Where else can you fill your well?

19:05– Outcome of the Month: The Star. The hope in healing.

Episode 135: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of 2020

episode 135 So You Wanna Be a Witch: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of 20202. Sarah Chappell in a white sweater smiling into the camera.

Did you meet your goals this year?

It’s the end of December, so now is the time to turn back the pages of your real-or-metaphorical journal and give yourself a reality check. I’ll show you mine, if you show me yours!

2020 is (almost) OVER, y’all and it’s been a long time coming. I’ve had some big wins, some personal wins, some learning curves, and some frankly shitty blows. This week, I’m sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly of my business in 2020.

As always, I’m not here to be glossy–I’m here to be transparent with you about my experience and my numbers. I’ve phased out parts of my business and overhauled others. I’ve gone through ups and downs in hiring. I’ve made amazing connections through my business and been taken advantage of. Ultimately, both my successes and my failures of this year keep bringing me back to the same point:

The qualitative experience of my business is a far better measure of success than numbers.

Isn’t that just the classic Hallmark holiday lesson?

Join me this week for our New Year’s Reality Check and help me craft a new term for the newbie business tip that I currently call: “the spaghetti method”.

Show notes:

1:08– My word for 2020: Focus!

5:22– How I measured up to my goal.

10:01– The Good: Where I let go and what I added.

12:34– The Bad: Hiring and firing.
