Episode 20: Courtney Alexander

Courtney Alexander Dust II Onyx on So You Wanna Be A Witch

Courtney Alexander is an artist, publisher, and the creator of the Dust II Onyx tarot deck. When I first saw images from her deck, I was left breathless with the depth and power that they hold. Courtney mentions in this episode that most of the tarot decks featuring people of color are not in fact made by people of color, and Courtney’s work cuts through that noise to offer a distinct and much-needed point of view for tarot.

In this episode, Courtney explores her journey from studying advertising to committing to being an artist, with stops along the way to explore her identity, body image, and spiritual life in the context of race. We talk about moving through this world in larger bodies, and Courtney shares how her early work examined size in our culture.

Courtney then traces the creation of Dust II Onyx: A Melanted Tarot from her first designs to the foundation point of featuring black people and images on a black background.  She shares about learning to trust herself through the process of writing the guidebook, and the challenges of using Kickstarter to launch Dust II Onyx and managing expectations.

Episode 19: Samantha Story

Acupuncturist Samantha Story on So You Wanna Be A Witch

Classical Chinese Medicine has become a transformative part of my own health and wellbeing, and I am thrilled to have an expert on the podcast to share about her practice and experience! Samantha Story MS, L.Ac is an acupuncturist and healer based in New York City. Samantha stumbled upon Chinese Medicine and in it found the language and framework to describe the way she has always viewed the world.

In this episode, Samantha gives us a primer on Classical Chinese Medicine, how it differs from Traditional Chinese Medicine, and covers the basics of acupuncture and how it works. She also shares about starting her business, overcoming the discomfort of asking for money, the magic of continuity, and working with judgement.

And just when you think it’s over… Samantha turns the tables and asks me about my experience with Chinese Medicine! I talk about receiving treatment at the Daoist Traditions Student Clinic, and the books that Samantha had suggested that I read including The Web That Has No Weaver by Ted Kaptchuk, Between Heaven and Earth by Harriet Beinfield and Efrem Korngold, and Stone Medicine by Leslie J. Franks. I also mention Ro Giuliano of Dreamers and Diviners who was my first acupuncturist.
