Episode 181: Quick Coaching with Sarah. Firing Contractors, Self-Invalidation, and Effective Marketing

Quick Coaching with Sarah Chappell. Sarah Chappell sitting in a cafe and smiling into the camera.

Why aren’t you selling?

It’s easy to tell people how much you believe in your products or services. It’s easy to share how many PDFs come in your course. It’s easy to explain how much it would mean to you to make a sale.

But none of this is going to get you the sale.

In this week’s quick coaching episode we’re talking about effective marketing communication and so much more. Tune in so you can sell out your offer.

We cover:

1:33 – Advice on taking deposits for a high end program that won’t start for a few months

3:36 – Navigating firing contractors who continue to disrespect boundaries with empathy

13:33 – What do you personally love as effective growth strategies?

17:39 – Dealing with an old mentor that is being passive aggressive but is still following me

26:43 – I have a lot of people interested in my business and what I’m offering, but very few bookings

32:00 – Finding my lane in what feels genuine to post or share on social media for my biz

37:09 – How to market my gifts and gain authentic clients for breathwork

43:56 – Self-invalidation: I am selling but now I’m worrying that my offer is not good enough, that people will think I’m a scam

Episode 180: How I Became a Business Coach

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 180: How I Became a Business Coach. Sarah M. Chappell stands beside her laptop smiling.

You could go to school for two years for an MBA and still not be an entrepreneur. In fact, I might argue that an MBA doesn’t even prepare you to navigate the world of small business.

So what does?

Experience.

I’ve been experiencing the business world since I got my first part-time job at 14. And every job and club and activity and interest I pursued since then made me the business coach I am today.

But I didn’t want to become a business coach.

After years of working in marketing, I actually tried to leave that world behind.

I went to work for myself as a tarot reader and herbalist, and you know what happened? People kept coming to me for business advice. What shone through as I was promoting my courses and products were my business and marketing skills, and that’s what folks really needed from me.

Often, if you take a step back, you’ll see that the jobs you’ve held, the clubs you’ve been in, and the recreational activities you’ve chosen combine to give you an incredibly unique skill set. One that makes you perfect for a job you may not even know you want.

In this episode I talk about the life and work experiences that got me to where I am today, and the ongoing learning that goes into successfully coaching business owners.

Tune in so you can take a step back, review your own life experiences, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll discover a set of skills and a future that you hadn’t even thought to dream of.

Show Notes:

6:15– How it all started

15:45– An attempt to leave marketing behind

27:20– Being a lifelong learner

44:00– How it comes together

Episode 179: Quick Coaching with Sarah. Effective Instagram Engagement

Quick Coaching with Sarah Chappell. Sarah Chappell sitting in a cafe and smiling into the camera.

Instagram is not a strategy.

Every week we get questions about Instagram from frustrated IG users like you who aren’t seeing the results they want. This makes sense, because I’m hosting this coaching session on Instagram. But what if I told you that Instagram isn’t the problem? That the algorithms are not out to get you? That more followers doesn’t equal more sales?

This week I’m here to tell you what the real problem is so you can realign your relationship with Instagram and get serious about strategy.

We’re covering:

1:31–How to engage in Instagram in a way that is effective and grounded?

Episode 178: Quick Coaching with Sarah. Virtual assistants, Building an Audience, and Newsletters

Quick Coaching with Sarah Chappell. Sarah Chappell sitting in a cafe and smiling into the camera.

Who are you reaching?

Everyone talks about building audiences for their business, but shaping your audience is just as important. Quality over quantity, folks! WHO you are reaching with your business and WHAT you do once you have their attention is more important than having a long mailing list or watching your followers count rise.

When you think about your audience, are you remembering to focus on the customers and community you already have?

This week on Quick Coaching, we cover:

1:47–How do I hire a virtual assistant?

9:40–The difference between a contractor and an employee

15:14–How do I grow an audience of people who actually buy my shit?

19:50–Bonuses and risk mitigation

27:28–What are some best practices for newsletters?

33:04–Do I have to pick between my audiences?

Episode 177: How to Change Your Mind

Can we normalize changing your mind about your business plan?

One of the issues I see business owners struggling with all the time is the PRESSURE to make “the right” decision. I see this pressure on everything from structuring offers and pricing for scale, to how often you should post to Instagram. But what makes a decision “the right one?”

The implication of this stress is that, as a business owner, any decision you make has to be final because you can never go back and change your mind. WHAT?

Let’s be clear: In order to run a successful business, you need to be able to adapt. Sometimes, you’ll be adapting to the market, sometimes you’ll be adapting to your own evolving needs, but if your business is going to succeed you WILL be adapting to something.

Adaptation requires CHANGE.

So what do you do when you need to change your mind about a decision you made in your business? This week on the podcast, I’m covering the ways to recognize it’s time to make a change, how to talk to your customers about the changes you make in your business, and most importantly: The crucial questions you need to ask yourself throughout the entire process.

Tune in this week with a pen and paper and get ready to hop on this “normalization” train when it comes to changing your mind in your business.

Show Notes:

1:48– Planning for your inevitable success

4:10– When we don’t want to do it anymore

6:41– The questions to ask in the face of change

14:45– How to handle disappointing people

Episode 176: Why I Hate Patreon

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 176: Why I Hate Patreon. Sarah Chappell making a shocked face while pointing to a spot on a brick wall.

Patreon sucks, y’all!

Whoa, that’s a bold topic for an entire podcast episode! I know.

It’s no secret that I have strong opinions, but I don’t bash lightly. What started as a bone to pick with this particular platform has turned into a hill that I’m ready to die on. Why? Because small business owners are not succeeding there, but the popularity of this platform has everyone believing it will be their ticket to success.

Patreon has become super popular recently, so much that it seems like it has become part of the New Business Owner Starter Pack. The marketing is sexy: Start for free, make your work accessible to anyone in your audience for just a couple of bucks a month, don’t pay anything until you get paid, and join the hundreds of thousands of other creators using this same platform.

This company is an example of really successful marketing, but we need to be clear about who the customer here is. On Patreon, your customers are not their customer–YOU are! Patreon profits off you.

Which isn’t a bad thing, right? All of our software and platforms make money off of us. We have a problem, they have a solution, we all win! What makes Patreon different?

In this episode I am giving our podcast fully over to my rant. I am breaking down what exactly makes Patreon such a bad deal for business owners. I pull apart the service agreements, use real numbers to show you what you would be paying Patreon if you DID create a self-sustaining business on their platform, and offer you alternative platforms that give you a way better deal for similar services.

Tune in this week to get behind the marketing and crunch some numbers so that you have the information you need to reach the audience of your dreams.

Show Notes:

1:35– My first problem with Patreon: The math.

9:16– Payment processing

14:18– Patreon will not get you new customers!

23:21– The race to the bottom of the barrel

33:11– What to do instead? Other options besides Patreon.

Episode 175: Quick Coaching with Sarah. Social Media Burnout, Imposter Syndrome, and Testing New Offers

Quick Coaching with Sarah Chappell. Sarah Chappell sitting in a cafe and smiling into the camera.

Are you burned out by trying to prove yourself?

Online business is often marketed as the “easy work from home” option, so what has so many people tripping over their social media schedule, drowning in the sea of search engines, and feeling like they aren’t good enough to be doing what they’re doing?

These feelings are so common! You are not alone and all is not lost! This week on Quick Coaching with Sarah, we tackle:

1:30– Social media is draining me! Are there alternatives to traffic people to my Etsy page?

12:09– How do I overcome imposter syndrome?

12:03– When testing new offers, should I charge for my services or offer them for free?
