Episode 112: Selling Like an Actual Human

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 112: how to sell like an actual human. Sarah Chappell grinning into the camera

Do you miss telemarketers? Back in the day, when we had landlines and couldn’t screen our calls and we’d rush to the ringing phone only to have a disembodied voice immediately launch into trying to sell us something? No? Me neither. I always hung up wondering, “who actually buys vacuum cleaner bags from a cold call?”

Cold DMs are the new telemarketers, y’all. But unsolicited pitches clogging up inboxes is only one of many marketing mistakes I see small business owners making as they try to mimic the behavior of big companies that seem to make a lot of sales.

Don’t you want to be CHOSEN by your customers? Don’t you want enthusiastic consent? I want a “hell yes” from my customers. I created my business to create impact, not to collect faceless credit card numbers. And if you’re like most of the small business owners I help, you feel the same passion for what you offer.

So, this week on the podcast, I want to talk about the advantage that small business owners have in marketing: actual human interaction! And what do we want out of human interaction? Enthusiastic consent!

In this episode, I share the biggest mistakes I see in marketing and share the framework for sales that works for me, as a soul-centered, service-oriented entrepreneur: Consensual Selling.

Join us this week to get out of robotic selling and into human connection! And if find yourself wanting more, at the end of the episode, make sure to join me on July 20th for a free training on this very topic:

4:10– Hand-raising content: Selling as communication!

Episode 110: July Energy Reading

Episode 110 July Energy Reading. 3 tarot cards next to a coffee cup on a white table

In my first time talking directly to y’all since the national sweep of Black Lives Matter uprisings that started in Minneapolis, I need to lay the groundwork for this month’s energy reading: Fuck “Business as Usual,” a new world is entirely possible.

We are living through a global pandemic, but the police are still carrying on with their racist, violent practices. That is business as usual. We are trying to keep ourselves afloat in the midst of a rapid destabilization, but the stability we crave is not the old norm. The cards this month are meeting us on the edge of this knife. There is pain and anguish, and there is also incredible opportunity.

Whether the cards are speaking to us as individuals rushing to meet the blazing revolution, or addressing our work as individual business owners (hopefully, both), the messages are the same: Plant seeds and actively encourage their growth, tend your boundaries, stop stalling, and take a leap of faith.

The cards want us to remember that we are the drivers of our fate, and that nothing can change while we refuse to act. Action and change are scary when we are not sure about what lies on the other side. This is a time of waiting, but it is not a time for passivity. This month, the cards are calling us to actively engage the wait and ground ourselves in the face of great uncertainty.

Join us this week for a dose of Love and Peace and Fuck the Police.

Show Notes:

00:20– Uprisings, Revolution, and a reminder that we stand in action and solidarity with Black Lives Matter in this space.

4:18– Energy of the month: 7 of Pentacles. Tending instead of waiting.

8:53– Action for the month: 4 of Pentacles, reversed. Recommitting to our boundaries.

15:46– Release work for the month: 2 of Wands, reversed. Nothing will change if we don’t take action.

17:42– Outcome of the month: Fool, reversed. It’s ok to be uncertain.

Episode 109: Brain-Based Wellness with Alyssa Chang

episode 109 so you wanna be a witch alyssa chang, brain-based fitness, brain-based wellness

This week, I am so pumped to introduce you to Alyssa Chang! I fully admit that I go a little overboard in my fandom here, but I think you’ll understand why once you listen to this episode.

Alyssa is a brain-based health and movement coach who works with clients on improving their connection between their brain and body, so they can heal their metabolism, rewire their mindset, and move pain free. She uses movement, lifestyle adjustments, and neuroscience to dramatically change how her clients relate to their bodies. Whoa. I have personally had a session with her and it exploded my mind!

In this episode, Alyssa explains why traditional ways of approaching fitness and wellness often fall short of addressing chronic issues. She explains how our nervous system works to protect us and how taking care of our nerves, managing our anxiety, and even stretching our eyeballs (no, I’m not kidding) can do way more for us than just muscle movement alone. She shows that brain-based science allows us to work with our bodies without shame or judgement, so every body can feel better.

We also talk about the cutting-edge approach that Alyssa is taking with her business: moving a tactile, traditionally “in-person” career online. Alyssa shares how coaching online allows her to empower her customers, rather than allowing them to be dependent on her for success. We discuss abundance mindset, when it comes to serving our clients, and the radical idea of working to make yourself obsolete.

Join us this week for some major brain nerd-outs and to bear witness to my borderline-obsession with Alyssa Chang!

Show Notes:

3:58– What is brain-based movement and how does anxiety influence our pain?

16:39– Small movements for big change. Eye fitness! (Seriously)

23:21– Taking a tactile business online

31:23– What is intuition and how do we hear what our bodies are telling us?

36:49– Tips for getting started.

Episode 108: The Less I Do, The More I Make with James Wedmore

So You Wanna Be A Witch Episode 108 James Wedmore. Business mindset.

James is a brilliant entrepreneur with over a dozen years of experience in online business. After moving from broke bartender to building a multiple 7-figure business, he now helps other entrepreneurs scale their businesses, help more people, and make more money by focusing on business mindset. He also hosts his own woo-woo business podcast (which you should totally listen to, if you aren’t already on that train): The Mind Your Business Podcast.

This episode is 54 minutes packed with solid gold, y’all. James considers himself a contrarian and inspires people to question their baseline assumptions about work and success. In this episode, James talks about his relationship to his business as his spiritual growth. He shares the core of his business mindset—The Less I Do, The More I Make—and reminds us to stay focused, instead of staying busy.

James continues to flip some paradigms by calling out critical misinterpretations of some spiritual truths and corrects the top mistake he sees in the approach people take to growing their business. We also talk about what scaling really means and how to set yourself up to do it effectively.

Join us this week and get yourself out of the hard work hustle mindset!

Edit: After this podcast episode aired, So You Wanna Be a Witch community members expressed concerns about their interactions with James Wedmore, Team Wedmore, and members of the Business By Design community.

I reached out to James to ask how he planned to address these concerns and was not satisfied with his replies. In response, I left the Business By Design affiliate program.

Equality and transparency are two of my core values. Until Business By Design makes a transparent commitment to anti-racist practices, I cannot assure members of the So You Wanna Be a Witch community that James and Business By Design share these values.

Show Notes:

2:05– Getting out of the “hard work hustle” mindset

15:40– Doing the right thing for your business: What you think is moving forward is actually moving backward.

Episode 107: June Energy Reading

Episode 107 June Energy Reading. 3 tarot cards next to a deck and a cup of black coffee. tarot for business. soul centered business

What if failure weren’t an option? What if all outcomes were neutral? What if you got up off your sad butt and rode off into the sunset? No, June’s energy reading isn’t telling you to pick yourself up by your bootstraps, but it is telling us that we need to check our attitude.

Summer is said to be easy, but this month the cards are pushing us hard into introspection and accountability. Y’all, this is a reminder that humans are meaning-makers. That is our magic. It can be beautiful and rich, but it can also be limiting.

This month, the cards are asking us to take up the reins of our brains. What meaning are we giving to situations? Are these the stories we want to be living in? Are these the mindsets that allow us to live our dreams? How can we better love ourselves?

But it isn’t all down to us. We don’t live in a vacuum (even if sheltering in place might have made it feel that way); there are people ready to hold us. What if we stopped trying to have all the answers? Yes, even us bossy business owners who feel like we have to have it all together! What would it mean to hold the vision instead of doling out the solutions?

Meaning is what we make of it, and when we give ourselves permission to take accountability instead of control, we make space for magic.

And speaking of: make sure to catch the first few minutes of this ep to hear all the deets about my new upcoming free training with Ren Zatopek: How to Craft a Magical Business.

Tune in this week to pick yourself apart and set yourself free! Fuck the platitudes! Ride off into the sunset on a horse (or vehicle of your choosing)! Meet you there.

Episode 106: Anti-Capitalist Abundance with Sarah Gottesdiener

What does business success mean when you are an anti-capitalist feminist? Those things so often seem in direct opposition, right? We know that we live in a system that benefits a few people over many others. We know that so many people are exploited and harmed so that a handful can hoard. We know that the structures used to create and keep wealth are so often used to do so at the expense of others. So, if our values oppose that systemic violence, what does it say about us if we try to Be Successful? What does it mean if we decide that we don’t just deserve to survive, but to thrive?

Oh my Gottess, y’all (the joke is building, are you ready?). I feel that! I have been there! And I am so excited to be talking all about it with the divine Sarah GOTTESdiener.

If you somehow don’t know who Sarah is, she is the witch behind Modern Woman. You may know her as the publisher of the Many Moons workbooks, but she does so much more. She is a teacher, writer, tarot reader, and YES the owner of a product-based business that makes apparel, potions, calendars, and more.

In this episode, Sarah and I go deep and hard on our values as feminist business owners and all the work we have done on ourselves to be able to do work that aligns with our values.

We talk about redefining abundance as a feminist act to oppose capitalism and how undervaluing and underselling ourselves isn’t serving anyone. We talk about disentangling the reality that many people have to work for less than they are worth because we live in an unfair world from deserving to work for less than you are worth because you are afraid of abandoning your values.

Right??? Okay but how DO we work in alignment with those values?

Sarah tells us how she has structured and shaped her business to actually serve her community. She shares her tithing practices and how they work both as accountability to her privilege as a white, cisgender business owner AND create some real money magic. We talk about how to center our values, as we define what success and abundance means for us.

Y’all, I can’t even summarize this, so you’ll have to hop on over to your favorite podcast app and tune in for the whole thing. Get ready to get over your fear of success, without compromising what really matters.

Show Notes:

2:46– No Niche! Diversifying your business to stay in your values

13:36– How are your business actions shaped by your feminist values?

21:12– How has healing your relationship with money enabled you to serve your community and live your values?

Episode 105: 5 Questions to Ask Yourself About Your Money

So You Wanna Be a Witch Episode 105: 5 Questions to Ask Yourself About Your Money. Sarah Chappell smirking at the camera.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know that I love pushing social convention to talk about money. It’s one of the first manners that we learn as children, right? Don’t ask people how much money they make (it’ll embarrass them), don’t tell people how much our family makes (it’s tacky), don’t ask for money (it’s humiliating), don’t do things “just” for money (it’s shallow), don’t talk about how much things cost (it’s awkward), but you better have a fool-proof budget in your pocket when you stumble out of the nest and off into the world—oh my gosh, no wonder it brings up feelings of fear, guilt, and shame for so many of us!

Now, y’all know I’m not a financial advisor or an accountant, but I do have a lot of opinions when it comes to money and business (are you surprised?). I also have the experience of working with hundreds of small business owners and guess what I’ve learned? You can’t expect to run a business and avoid talking specifics about money.

So, this week I am dedicating the podcast to five questions for you to explore and improve your personal and business relationship with money. These five questions get at the root of our behavior and invite us to choose how we want to act, and thus what success we are open to. I include some practical tips for investing, risk-taking, and returns. I also wax poetic about some software that makes me weak in the knees and why to tell your money to get a goddamn job already!

Tune in this week for my soap box about social media ads and my regular mixing bowl of metaphors (wait—is it regular? Guys, is this A Thing?).

Show Notes:

0:49– What do you believe about money?

2:33– How are you paying yourself?

8:33– How quickly do you want to grow?

12:07– What is your relationship to risk?

Episode 104: Sex and Money with Dr. Carolyn Elliott

Carolyn Elliott looking at the camera and smiling. existential kink. shadow work.

Did you know that you have a desire to fail? A desire to be rejected? A desire for scarcity? What would happen if you allowed yourself space to… enjoy them? I know that might sound crazy to us when we are hustling like mad to make rent, to grow our business, to reach our lofty goals—these are the very things we are working against! But hang on for a minute.

Dr. Carolyn Elliott is an alchemist of the psyche. She works with people to integrate their unconscious and conscious by transmuting fear and pain into joy and bounty. She is a coach, online program creator, and the author of Existential Kink: Unmask Your Shadow and Embrace Your Power. This week, I am thrilled to be breaking taboos to talk about some shadowy shit! Yes, sex and money: the two things keeping you up at night.

(A quick CW for folks, especially to you parents stuck at home with your young children: this episode does contain explicit references to sex, BDSM, and your deep discomfort with the idea of wealth.)

Carolyn’s work centers on the understanding that suppressing desires creates harmful patterns in our lives, as those desires try to sneak their way into being satisfied. Much like folks involved with BDSM create a safe container to fulfil a desire that seems dangerous, so does creating a container for these taboo life experiences allow us a place to be satisfied by them. Allowing our conscious mind to accept our unconscious desires and motivations allows our unconscious mind to accept and hold our conscious desires. We can succeed only when we do both!

Discussing discomfort with desire means we have to spend a lot of time talking about money. Carolyn breaks down the origin of money and our validly complex feelings around it. She disentangles the power of money from abuse of power and reminds us of the ways that money is actually a revolution for the people! Whoa.

Tune in this week for some sexy talk and secret desires, but like… mostly about the contents of your wallet.

Show Notes:

2:21– What is Existential Kink and why that name?

Episode 103: May Energy Reading

Sarah Chappell's hand drawing 3 tarot cards next to a journal on a wooden surface. May business energy reading. tarot for business. monthly tarot

Are you ready to get down to Lizzo? Because May is reminding us that we are our own soulmate! That’s great news to those of you who are sheltering at home alone right now (look up in the mirror like: damn, she the one!), but it’s really an important reminder to all of us business owners who are responsible for holding ourselves (and our businesses, employees, outreach) down.

May is coming in strong with the insecurity and overwhelm, and that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who has turned on the news in the last month. So much is uncertain, so much is scary, so much is changing, and that opens up so many opportunities for us to feel broke and shut out in the cold. Notice that the operative word there is feel. Feelings aren’t always facts.

This month, the cards remind us how much we can’t control: other people, world events, a tiny virus flying through the air! That reminder, hard though it is, steers us back to what we can control: ourselves and our actions.

This month, we are called to put on our grown up pants and look reality in the face: What is actually happening? What are my numbers? Where am I spending my energy and resources and is it working? When we have that information, when we have truly looked at it, we are able to take effective action and make change that serves us. Our validation and our security cannot come from outside sources anymore (as if it ever really could). It’s time for a “me, myself kinda attitude” but like, in a put-on-your-own-oxygen-mask-and-be-your-own-savior kinda way. Have your own back, be responsible for your actions and your feelings. See where it takes you this month.

Join us this week for a look ahead at May and for some of my deep biology nerdom!

Show Notes:

1:11– Energy of the Month: 5 of Pentacles. Feeling overwhelmed?

7:17– Action of the Month: 4 of Pentacles. Check your boundaries.
