Episode 11: Sarah’s Soliloquy

Today’s episode is brought to you by me fucking up. That’s right: I’m a fuckup. I failed. I fail every day, in business and in life. And that’s just fine! My scheduling error gave me the opportunity to speak directly to you, to share my thoughts, and to directly ask you to join the conversation.

In this episode, I discuss mental health, cultural appropriation and white supremacy, spiritual dogma, alcoholism, and pricing services that are seen as gifts from spirit. I look at my success programming and privilege, and how that gets in the way of my work. I talk about my family, and our ancestral history as slave owners and segregationists in North Carolina. I speak frankly about how hard it is to be my own boss, how I routinely fuck up, and how applying my own extensive marketing experience to my own business is challenging. I share how my business tanked in June, resulting in a mental health crisis that led me to shutdown for the summer.

It’s a lot. It’s a little rambly. It is probably offensive. I encourage you to listen, and then to reach out. Comment here or on Instagram. Let me know what you think. Question me. Share your stories and experiences. Let’s build a body of knowledge that can help us all to find the path.

(The sound quality isn’t amazing, and I apologize for that. Turns out it’s a lot harder to get clean audio living in a city! My mountain home was a touch more quiet. I’m working to make it better for the next episodes.)

I mention three previous podcast episodes. Check out Anna Toonk for a discussion of pricing, and Ren Zatopek and Asia Suler for creating direct relationships with spirit rather than appropriating cultures and traditions. Ren also talks about money in a way that is deeply illuminating.

This blog post by Layla Saad does a much better job of talking about white supremacy, service, and spiritual business than I did. I recommend you read it.

Janet Kent of Medicine County Herbs is amazing and developed the herbal protocol I’m on for depression and anxiety.

My blog rant about the necessity of alcohol-free herbalism can be found here.

A quick primer on Antifa.

I’m really excited by new and diverse voices in tarot deck creation. Check out the Dusk II Onyx and Slow Holler decks.

Episode 10: Asia Suler

Oh my goodness I don’t know where to start with Asia Suler of One Willow Apothecaries. By gushing, I suppose. Asia’s work and life have shown me what is possible when we meld passion, service, and business-savvy. Asia is a teacher, writer, and herbalist with a beautiful vibrational remedy product line and magical classes. She recently completed a 6-figure launch of her first extensive online course, Intuitive Plant Medicine, and has a thriving one-on-one healing practice.

Asia is a woman who can share deeply personal and inspiring stories about plant allies and connecting with her wider self, and also talk shop about online marketing and content creation! She navigates that space with grace, and in this episode she opens up about starting her business while on food stamps, chronic pain as initiatory experience, and being in direct relationship with the wider world.

We discussed the high priestess of online business, Marie Forleo. I first learned of Marie from Asia, and remain deeply grateful to that introduction to modern online marketing.

Episode 9: Anna Toonk

Anna Toonk is the premier connecter of lady witches in NYC. Her ability to reach out and create relationships astounds me – and is, naturally, how we met! Anna is an intuitive healer using tools like tarot, channeling, and crystals to support her one-on-one clients and lead super rad events all over New York.

In this episode, Anna opens up about finding spirituality as an adult, transitioning from a 6-figure production career to full-time witchin’, and how to have healthy boundaries around being of service. We dive into running a business like a business, what to do when people ask for free readings, moving through the world in a larger body, and learning to be ok with disappointing people.

Anna is a dreamboat full of truthiness medicine. Check out the podcast below or on the platform of your choice!

Episode 8: Amber Magnolia Hill

Amber Magnolia Hill of Aquarian Dawn was one of my first herb world girl crushes. Her honesty and transparency about her life and her business have been a model for me in the online marketing space, and I am so grateful that she took time to speak with me for this episode.

Amber is an herbalist, educator, mother, and writer who addresses topics like women’s health and grief head-on. I stand in awe of her healthy boundaries (her email autoresponder is EPIC and makes me hope I can be that confident someday) and her growing product line. In this episode, we jump into running a business while being a mother, story and myth as medicine, and being unemployable.

There is some serious St. John’s Wort fangirling, eloquent words from Amber on our collective yearning for ancestral knowledge, and a potentially polarizing discussion of nutrition and veganism. So fun! Check it out below or on the podcasting platform of your choice.

Note: This was a mountain-to-mountain recording and we definitely had some internet-related tech issues. I’ve edited where possible, but in the interest of keeping Amber’s message intact, there are some kind of wacky sounds. Thank you for your patience, and enjoy the crazy noises of rural internet!

Episode 7: Mystical Mandrake Root

Anais of Mystical Mandrake Root has her hands deep in a variety of tools from astrology and tarot to past life regression and crystals. These form the umbrella of her practice, which focuses on self-empowerment so that clients can have the knowledge they need to navigate their lives and purpose. We dive into past lives and how they affect Anais today, how learning astrology freed her from limiting beliefs, telling clients that your work is not the right fit for them, and the magic of part-time jobs. And carrier pigeons, just because.

Episode 6: Ren Zatopek

Sometimes you find someone’s work and just spiral into a fangirldom so deep you’re afraid you’ll never escape! That’s how I felt when I discovered Ren in an online marketing group. I was thrilled to see another business-minded witch, and dove right into her free eight week Spiritwork course. Ren’s work has felt like a real homecoming for me; I’ve long pushed aside more traditional witchcraft due to being ostracized as a child, and Ren’s dogma-free approach to skills like trance and ritual has been so freeing for me both personally and professionally.

Ren is a Spiritworker. Not sure what that means? Well, give the episode a listen! For Ren, Spiritwork is a natural extension of an animist world view, and when her witchy skills started to seep into her massage practice, a new business was born. Ren shares about discovering she is a witch, growing into that path, and now creating online apprenticeships to help others learn the tools of Spiritwork. Ren also offers some tips on how to work with one of the most difficult spirits of all: money.

There is plenty of witchy cackling, talk of goats and Pokemon, and much, much more. This episode is a touch NSFW so be an adult and listen at your own risk. If you enjoy the podcast, please leave a review on iTunes so more folks can learn about Ren’s magic.

Episode 5: Lindsay Mack

This episode is so deeply special to me. Lindsay Mack of Wild Soul Healing has been a teacher, mentor, and friend since the very beginning of my tentative steps into seeking a spiritual way of living. I met Lindsay through Maha Rose (sensing a theme, dear listeners? That is one heck of a special place) where she introduced me to Soul Tarot. I had never really understood tarot before, and thanks to Lindsay it has become the foundation of both my personal and professional life.

Lindsay is a joyful survivor of abuse and PTSD, and has built a thriving business offering intuitive counseling and teaching tarot. In this episode, Lindsay describes her spiral path to entrepreneurship through throwing away the traditional marketing advice and learning to be true to herself.

We also discuss the sacred path of pizza. Seriously, this episode is not to be missed.

Episode 4: Liza Fenster

Ep 4 Liza Fenster.png

I remember the first time I met Liza Fenster. We were at an event and she swiftly crossed the room to talk to me, saying that we had some interests in common (namely sobriety and tarot) and should connect. The vim and vigor with which she approached me has become a core part of how I think about Liza; she is full of energy and forward momentum, embracing the tough lessons of her life and swiftly transforming them into ways to help her community. In this episode, Liza shares her story and path. We discuss time spent in ditches and time spent in service, what it’s like to be a new mom after 30 hours in drug-free labor, and how spirit keeps offering us the invitation to follow our path even if we ignore it the first few (or fifty!) times.

Episode 3: Elyssa Jakim

Elyssa Jakim is an intuitive healer, Reiki Master, and all-around Goddess. In this episode she leads us through her journey from Harvard to professional acting to healership. I know Elyssa from my muggle days when I managed a wineshop where Elyssa worked. I was grateful for her friendship then, and even more so when it came time for me to explore my path to the woo side because Elyssa was well on her way and I was able to follow in her footsteps. Elyssa’s watery faerie magic is palpable in this episode. Jump on in, the water is fine!

Episode 2: Gabrielle Gray

Gabrielle Gray is one of those people who just radiates light. I had the immense pleasure of working alongside her at Maha Rose in Brooklyn, and she really activated my relationship to Reiki and energy work through her passion (and a pretty amazing healing session!). Gabby has had a windy road to finding her path as a Certified Health Coach and Reiki practitioner, and I am so glad that she joined me to share about the beautiful ways that life leads us where we need to be.
